Why is My Dodge Colt Check Engine Light on?

Hatchback, sedan, or wagon, Colt was the subcompact car to be driving in the 1980s and 1990s if you wanted fuel-efficiency, affordability, and, more than anything else, the reliability that came with owning a Dodge.

The model had some issues during its career, though -- most of them, found following the Check Engine light popping up on the dash. Here's a few to watch out for.

1. Bad Oxygen Sensor

A Check Engine light on in a Colt means a faulty oxygen sensor or two, most of the time. That's even more likely if the car's gas mileage is getting worse, if its engine hesitates, misfires, or stalls, or if its ride quality's gotten rougher. A failed emissions test is telling. The fix here -- replacement, really -- runs $360 to $415 or so on average.

2. Faulty Emissions System

Another reason why your Colt Check Engine light might be on: emissions system failure. This is even likelier if the car won't start, if its engine's losing power, if it won't stay running, or if shifting is getting tougher (if not impossible). It's most likely, though, if it's also having trouble speeding up, jerking while being steered, and if, overall, the car's difficult to drive.

Repair costs depend on the part. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, for example, can run $365 to around $450 to replace, while fuel evaporative canisters can run $450 or so to a little more than $500.

3. Defective Catalytic Converter

Less often, the Check Engine light can show up on the dash in a Colt because of a bad catalytic converter. Most likely, this is the issue if the engine's slower and less responsive, if it's having acceleration problems, if its exhaust smoke is black and smells sulfuric, like rotten eggs, and if it's hot on the underbody. Replacing a cat converter can run $2,225 to a little over $2,300, on average.

Repairs like these can be pretty easy to take care of, though. A Mopar service center can even help with them. Just choose Mopar parts for the job. They'll be genuine Dodge, so you won't be sacrificing quality. Plus, unlike aftermarket parts, OEM will fit your ride and work right the first time.
