Take Your Dodge Omni from 1980s Relic to Classic Hatch in Three Easy Mods

Your Omni is reliable, fuel-efficient, comfortably roomy, and best of all, affordable enough to fix up when it needs it. Put simply, it's everything a vintage a href="/v-dodge">Dodge car should be; so, take good care of it, and it'll last you a while. Upgrade it, though, and it'll be more -- it'll become a pleasure to drive, maybe even getting a little attention in your driveway to boot.

Good thing you came to us here at Detroit Mopar for advice on what to do. Here's a few ideas for your next project.

1. Mod for Performance

There are three things to do here: add a turbocharger, swap out your factory induction system for a cold air intake, and upgrade from your factory engine air filter to a performance air filter.

Together, they'll pull even more (and better) air into the engine, creating a richer air-and-fuel mix and delivering a power bump during combustion that'll instantly make the drive more fun. Customize the exhaust on top of that -- put in, say, a cat-back exhaust with wider-diameter tubing -- and you'll relieve backpressure at the same time, both helping the engine perform better and giving its rev a more aggressive tone (one sure to turn heads).

2. Update for Handling

You can get lower ride height for better control, easily. Just swap the factory springs in the suspension out for lowering springs, which'll drop the ground clearance, and add performance shocks and struts. Not only will the car be more stable, but it'll corner a lot more precisely.

Want quick results? Drop the car's weight a little; get rid of any stock steel wheels and replace them with lighter aluminum alloy wheels -- they're more advantageous for maneuverability.

3. Add Accessories

You can go any direction here; it depends on your needs (although preferences are a lot more fun). You can, for instance, add a cargo tray, net, or liner to help manage luggage better. Of course, there's also the prospect of installing a roof rack and crossbars to haul more of it on top of the car, or of putting on air deflectors and a spoiler to cut irritating wind noise and reduce air resistance during a drive -- the list goes on.
