What are Three Cheap Fixes You Can DIY for Dodge W350?

W350: the ideal Dodge truck. 4x4, serious towing and hauling chops. You'll want to stay on top of regular service, else it won't be on the road much longer.

That means taking care of a few common problems sooner, so you don't end up footing some huge bill while the pickup you love sits in pieces in the bay of a Mopar service center. Our advice: stay as far ahead of them as possible: keep an eye out for the following. If needed, take care of repairs ASAP. (Luckily, none of them are all that expensive.)

1. Brake Shoes: $260 to $300

W350 had a known issue in its day where the brakes stopped working right. That happens to yours, and most likely, it's because the brake shoes have worn out. More specifically, the shoes on the 12-inch rear brakes. They'll have to be replaced -- a job that'll run you $260 plus on average, and sometimes, $300 or more.

2. Transmission Oil Cooler: $575 to $640

The truck also had a known issue where its transmissions failed -- usually, because the lines in the transmission oil cooler were pinched or clogged. You run into that, and you should try flushing the system. If that doesn't work, the cooler will need to be replaced, to the tune of anywhere from $575 to $640, on average. (That's a lot less than the thousands of dollars a transmission can cost to replace.)

2. Oil System: $240 to $700

Another known issue: oil leaks from more than a few different places -- from the gaskets on the valve covers, for example, from the timing cover gasket, and even from the gasket on the intake manifold. It can even leak from the distributor O-ring and the rear main seal area's bearing cap (at which point, it can get into the distributor). You'll have to replace any trouble parts, including the distributor, if it ends up full of oil.

Cost varies here; a valve cover gasket usually runs $240 to $290 on average, while a timing cover gasket can run $900 to $1,000 or more. A distributor, on the other hand, can be priced $480 to $700 plus.
