What Types of Brakes are There?

Just about every vehicle -- Chrysler 200, Jeep Grand Cherokee, you name it -- has one of two. One kind is disc and the other is drum. Disc brakes are comprised of brake rotors and brake calipers, with brake pads attached to the latter. Drum brakes are made up of brake drums and brake shoes.

What Do Brakes Do and How Do They Work?

They generate the friction (resistance) that a vehicle uses to slow down and stop, although both kinds of systems function slightly differently. When you step on the brake pedal, the rotors in disc brake systems, for instance, clamp to the calipers and pads. The shoes in drum brake systems, however, fasten to the drums. Behind this, the brake pistons engage, traveling the bore in the master brake cylinder and pressurizing the brake fluid, and the fluid passes through brake hoses and lines.

When Should You Replace Brake Parts?

To determine that, inspect the condition of the brake pedal, fluid, lines, and hoses, plus that of the brake assemblies and the parking brake. If any of them needs to be changed, take care of the job ASAP. Otherwise, certain signs -- dashboard warning lights, shuddering, pulling sideways, grinding, weak brake grip, a soft or low brake pedal, longer slowing and stopping times -- will tell you it's likely time to do so. Before buying new brakes, though, be sure the parts are genuine OEM, not aftermarket.
