Factory MOPAR Alternators
Alternators convert mechanical energy into electricity. How one works is a process that starts with the engine running a belt and pulley and spinning a rotor shaft and ends by turning magnetic coils to produce AC power. A rectifier on the alternator captures that current and turns into DC power. This charges the battery in a vehicle and runs its electrical systems -- power windows, dash lights and displays, windshield wipers, power steering, in-car entertainment, heated seats, and the like.
Unfortunately, alternator failure happens. The causes of a bad alternator include jump-starting wrong, installing the wrong accessories, and damaged or worn-out parts. When one goes, replacement can get pricey, too. The average cost of it can run $600 to $800, with labor costs making up $120 to $150 or so, and parts comprising $480 and $650, approximately. Here at Detroit Mopar, though, we sell them cheaper. Our prices start at a little more than $30 to around $160, depending on model, and you can get up to 35% off MSRP on top pf that.
You're in luck, too: problems with an alternator are pretty easy to spot. Look for signs such as your headlights and car radio not working right, a burning smell under the hood, a whining engine, a dead battery, and charging system issues. If you see any, run a complete inspection and test your vehicle's charging system to figure out what's going on. If your alternator is the trouble, replace it immediately. Otherwise, install a new one every 80,000 to 150,000 miles or every 7 years. When it's time to buy, be sure to get genuine Mopar.
