Mopar Oil Filters FAQ

How Often Should the Oil Filter in My Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM be Replaced?

Whenever you change the oil. On a RAM 1500, for instance, that's every 3 months or 3,000 miles or so, minimum. Otherwise, when you see the symptoms of a bad oil filter -- an engine oil warning light on the dash, accompanied by loss of oil pressure, for example, or a stressed oil pump, worn pump bearings, or even general engine problems.

How Much Does Changing an Oil Filter Cost on Average?

$25 to $130. It depends, for one, on the model you drive, and secondly, on whether you have the job done at a Mopar service center. It can also depend on the motor oil your vehicle runs on -- conventional, synthetic, synthetic blend, or high-mileage -- and the added expense of getting an oil change at the same time. Having replace other oil system parts, like an oil cooler or a housing adapter, can even factor in, as can what kind of engine your ride's got.

How Do I Replace My Oil Filter?

It's fairly easy. Here's how.

All you'll need is an oil drain pan, fresh engine oil, and a pair of work gloves most of the time, plus some filter and socket wrenches and a mallet. Start with a warm engine. Follow any directions in your owner's manual. Be sure to use the right-size filter, with the right threads and gaskets. Most importantly, stick with an OEM replacement oil filter. It can mean the difference between oil properly filtered and a loose filter that leaks, comes off the oil pump, and ends up damaging the engine.
