What is the Difference Between a Roof Rack and Crossbars?

Both are often constructed from steel, aluminum, or another sturdy, load-bearing metal, but "roof rack" refers to the rails on your vehicle's roof that act as both basic supports for cargo weight and tie-down points for securing things. "Crossbars" are accessories, perpendicular rails that help distribute that weight more evenly. Sometimes, "roof rack" can also refer to a carrier, like a platform or cargo box, for everything from luggage to bikes and kayaks.

How Do I Install a Roof Rack on My Vehicle?

It's easy. First, to help make sure the rack's attachment points lie flush, clean your vehicle's roof. Then, grab the rack's towers and feet, plus your fitting kit. Now, loosen the screws on the foot mounts just enough for the crossbars to fit between them. Stick the crossbars in, measure the right width between them, tighten them, and then attach the rack's pads to its mounts, and its caps to its crossbars. After that, it's just a matter of centering the rack on your vehicle's roof, positioning the front of it away from the top of your windshield, locking the front foot mounts in place on your car doors' rims, and tightening them, using any clips included.
