Starters come one of two ways -- either new or remanufactured/"reman;" they can be called self-starters, starter motors, or cranking motors, and whichever your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM, FIAT, or SRT vehicle has, how it works is straightforward: it "cranks" or starts the engine using a dedicated starter motor and starter relay. A remote starter does this job without a key turn, with the press of a button on a smart key fob.

What are the Signs of a Bad Starter?

For one, turning the key in the ignition, and nothing happening. Secondly, the lights and displays on the dash illuminating, but the car not starting anyway. Third, being able to start, but only in certain gears or drive modes.

Other symptoms of starter failure include jump-starting not working, or finding the starter smoking or covered in oil. The causes are usually damaged parts, terminal corrosion, or loose wires.

How Much Does Starter Replacement Cost on Average?

$450 to $615 plus, according to RepairPal. However, it can depend on make and model.

Chrysler 200 starter replacement, for example, can run $585 to $890. Dodge Ram 1500 starter replacement, on the other hand, may run $245 to $320. Jeep Wrangler starter replacement, between $315 and $485; RAM 2500 starter replacement, anywhere from $390 to $1,090 or more, and so on.
